Caught Between a Pond and a Nude Place, pt. 1.

3/14/09

I dreamt that I was sitting by the side of the pond at my father’s house, trying to catch this big frog I had been watching. I slowly laid down next to the water, watching him. He was big and pale green, with large eyes, even for a frog, and he looked to be smiling. I wanted to catch him because he didn’t look like a native species.

Laying down next to the water’s edge, I slowly inced my way forward n the ground, hoping to swipe him from above. He was facing me as he sunned himself in the shallows, though, so I was sure he’d see me. I crept forward on my side, moving so slowly I thought I stood a chance, at least until he kicked one of his feet and started swimming into deeper water. A the same time I realized that my left side was getting very wet. Shit.

Rolling away from the water, I watched him go across the surface. I was already wet, so I contemplated slipping into the water after him. The cellphone and wallet in my pocket made that a bad idea until I realized that I could just take my pants off. I stripped down, hiding my clothes by the shore, and slid into the water after the frog.

I’ve always been a decent swimmer, and I made good time as I silently glided across the water. I was close to the frog, when I noticed that I couldn’t see the bottom of the pond below me, just inky blackness, even if I put my head underwater. I began to panic; I must admit, I’m a bit hydrophobic when it comes to deep water.

Aborting my attempts to capture the frog I turned around, or at least thought I did, and swam back to shore. When I got there, I found it unfamiliar. I couldn’t find my father’s stretch of shore. What I did find was a small landing next to a building. I pulled myself up, out of the water I felt such a pressing need to part from. I stood on a small steep patch of inclined roof between two taller parts of the building, a house right on the water. The sides of the alcove were close enough that I could ‘walk’ my way up the slanted roof to the top of the building, two stories above me.

At the top, I looked my head over the roofline to get my bearings. I couldn’t see much beyond the building, due to trees, and I had no idea which direction the building was even facing. I could have climbed up onto the roof, but thought better of leaving the narrow gap of ramped roof, not wanting to get stuck on someone’s roof naked.

On my way back down I noticed an open window, and not wanting to go back into the water, I climbed inside. Now I wasn’t just publicly indecent, I was also trespassing.

More to follow on Friday. This dream was long, so I don't feel too bad breaking it into installments. I'm not unhappy with the way it turns out, so stay tuned.
